A Little 3M
Taking advantage of their extended winter break, GSD students, members of the group Life Cycle wind the SCAT (Somerville Community Access Television) building with reflective tape giving some eye candy to passers by. Read on for their statement.
As part of the Somerville Arts Council and ArtUnion's winter lighting initiative for Union Square, we, Light Cycle, capitalize on the existing night time illumination in the Square: streetlights, storefronts, and the car headlights constantly passing through the Square.
The application of self-adhesive reflective tape to buildings, sidewalks, and street furniture encircles the square with patterns of reflected light that appear and disappear in rhythm with the traffic. The rhythm changes as viewers proceed through the Square. While intended primarily for nighttime lighting, the tape also reflects sunlight during the day.
This proposal requires minimal maintenance; it is made of materials already engineered for road use. Easy to attach and easy to remove, it leaves no traces.
