Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes

Since all us suburban kids have grown up and are curating shows now,  our collective experience of suburbia is now finally cool.  At the Walker Art Center,  the show Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes runs until late summer and then moves east to Pittsburgh.  It's all about the inspirational topic of suburbia (for reals) and the art it has subsequently produced.

Here are a few images of the Walker, unfortunately no photos were allowed into the exhibit, there's a great exhibition catalog, chock full of images and essays aptly titled Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes.  Some of the usual urbanism suspects were at this exhibition (Interboro, CLUI, Estudio Teddy Cruz) and it was great to see them there and I also discovered this Minneapolis/NY based office Coen + Partners which took a stab at reconfiguring the typical suburban housing lot model in their project Mayo Plan #1. Nice presentation too.

I have been, as of late, feeling the constrictive conservatism of landscape architecture in the US and while looking for some info about the Walker, I came across this interview between the Walker and Shane Coen and Tom Oslund of Coen + Partners. AMEN to the last sentence.

Uncommon Ground, Shane Coen + Tom Oslund interview

Walker Art Center, Minneapolis MN until August 17
